16-CHANNEL PROCESSOR LANDSCAPE

Sixteen channels is becoming the new premium centre.

ARCAM AVP45, StormAudio ISP Core 16, AudioControl Hyperion APR-16, JBL Synthesis SDP-58, Lyngdorf MP-60 2.1 and Trinnov Altitude16 all sit near the same nominal channel class — but the architectures are dramatically different.

WHY THE NUMBER MISLEADS

“16 channels” does not describe the processor.

One platform may mean sixteen fixed analog outputs. Another may process more channels than it has analog sockets. Another can route audio over Dante or AES67. Some provide multiple independent subwoofer channels; others count subs differently.

The useful comparison is therefore processing ceiling + output architecture + bass control + room correction + future expansion.

THE QUESTIONS THAT SEPARATE THEM
01

How many independent subs?

Four subwoofer sockets can be more useful than two extra height channels if the room is bass-limited.

02

What does room correction actually control?

Frequency EQ, phase, geometry, multi-sub optimisation and active room control are not equivalent capabilities.

03

Where does D/A conversion happen?

Analog XLR, AES/EBU and AoIP platforms place the DAC and rack wiring in very different parts of the system.

04

What happens at the next upgrade?

A cinema that might add wides, more subs or active crossovers should be evaluated against its future channel count now.
