WHY IT EXISTS
The broader, higher-channel McIntosh processor for systems that need more than the compact MX200 provides.
MX123 occupies a very different place from MX200. It provides 13.2 discrete audio channels, far more source connectivity, multi-zone capability and a wider set of immersive formats including DTS:X Pro and Auro-3D.
The trade-off is architectural age: its HDMI bandwidth is mixed rather than uniform and its room-correction platform is Audyssey MultEQ XT32 rather than Dirac Live.
SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE
Thirteen discrete channels, plus an unusually comprehensive connection set.
The 13.2 discrete channels are available on balanced and unbalanced outputs, while additional unbalanced outputs and a large collection of analog, digital and legacy video inputs make the MX123 unusually flexible in mixed-source systems.
That flexibility can be genuinely useful in complex luxury homes, but it should not be confused with the more focused modern architecture of MX200.

MX123 uses Audyssey MultEQ XT32 with Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume. This gives it a very different calibration workflow from the Dirac-equipped MX200.
The second subwoofer output is described by McIntosh as a discrete signal from subwoofer 1, so projects requiring advanced independent multi-subwoofer optimisation should be assessed carefully rather than counting output sockets alone.

For larger McIntosh systems that value connectivity and 13.2-channel flexibility.
MX123 can be compelling when the room needs more channels than MX200, requires multiple HDMI outputs, values Auro-3D/DTS:X Pro or must integrate a large collection of legacy and multizone sources.
For a simpler 7.2.4 system with a modern all-40Gbps video path and Dirac Full Bandwidth, MX200 is the cleaner contemporary architecture.

Audyssey or Dirac?
MX123 and MX200 use fundamentally different correction ecosystems, so calibration preference may decide the model.
How many high-bandwidth HDMI ports?
Only one input and two outputs are specified for 8K60/4K120; the remaining HDMI ports are 4K60.
Do you need the legacy connectivity?
MX123 carries substantial analog and legacy video connectivity that can be valuable in complex retrofit systems but unnecessary in a clean-sheet build.
