Astral 16
A sixteen-channel immersive cinema platform developed with StormAudio, combining twelve internal Class D amplifier channels, four balanced XLR pre-outs and Dirac Live room calibration.
Astral 16 is designed to reduce the number of boxes required in a sophisticated cinema. Twelve channels are amplified internally while four additional channels remain available as balanced line-level outputs.
Because it was developed in partnership with StormAudio, the product sits closer to specialist immersive processing than a conventional AVR even though power amplification is built in.
The first twelve amplifier channels are already chosen for you. That can simplify rack space, cabling and system matching, but it also means external amplification freedom is concentrated on the remaining four channels rather than all sixteen.
The product therefore makes the most sense when its integrated architecture aligns naturally with the loudspeaker sensitivity, channel count and desired power strategy.
Dirac Live provides the room-calibration layer.
Focal supplies Astral 16 with Dirac Live room calibration and a measurement microphone. The processor also supports Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and Auro-3D.
As with any Dirac platform, the exact calibration strategy still needs to account for subwoofer topology, crossover choices and the acoustic design of the room.
