Why software-defined processing matters in a reference cinema.

A processor’s useful life is increasingly determined by whether decoding, calibration and routing can evolve after the hardware is installed. Trinnov’s Altitude architecture is built around that premise.

Software-defined does not mean hardware is irrelevant

HDMI bandwidth, physical I/O, computing power and network interfaces are still hardware constraints. Software-defined means that a larger portion of the product’s behaviour is implemented in updateable software rather than locked into fixed-purpose DSP silicon.

That creates room for new decoders, calibration functions and workflows to arrive without replacing the entire processor.

Altitude has accumulated capability through software

Features such as additional discrete channels on Altitude16/32 and WaveForming were delivered to existing owners as software updates rather than as entirely new processor generations.

Trinnov has also announced a redesigned Altitude interface and updated immersive decoders while retaining compatibility with the established platform.

The platform still has physical ceilings

Altitude16 remains limited by its physical analog and S/PDIF output architecture, while Altitude32 and AltitudeCI offer different scaling paths. HDMI input count and network topology also remain hardware-defined.

Long-term flexibility is therefore strongest when the initial hardware architecture already matches the room’s likely growth path.

Future-proofing is a system decision

A software-updatable processor is valuable only if the rack, amplification, speaker wiring and network can also accommodate change. Future-proofing should therefore be planned across the complete cinema, not claimed by a single component.
