Why Trinnov measures a loudspeaker in three dimensions.

The four-capsule Trinnov microphone captures not only amplitude and phase, but also the physical direction of every loudspeaker. That geometry underpins Optimizer and Remapping.

Four capsules create directional information

Trinnov’s 3D measurement microphone uses four capsules arranged as a tetrahedron. By comparing arrival time and level between the capsules, the system can determine where each loudspeaker is located in three-dimensional space.

This is fundamentally different from a conventional single-capsule measurement where the processor knows the response at the microphone but not the speaker’s azimuth and elevation.

The reference seating position is the geometric anchor

The first measurement at the reference seating position is particularly important because it establishes the loudspeaker geometry used by the processor. The microphone must be upright, stable and aimed correctly towards the front of the room.

Secondary measurements can then broaden and smooth the optimisation across the listening area.

The measurement is more than a frequency curve

For each loudspeaker, the processor builds information about position, level, delay, amplitude response and phase response. This is why the same calibration can support both acoustic optimisation and spatial Remapping.

The measurement process therefore becomes part of the system architecture rather than merely an automatic equaliser routine.

Good calibration conditions still matter

Background noise, HVAC, obstacles near the microphone and movement during the reference measurement can reduce measurement quality. Trinnov recommends a quiet room and a clear acoustic path between loudspeakers and microphone.

The measurement tool is sophisticated, but it still depends on disciplined commissioning practice.
