Software-defined decoding
Processors built on general-purpose computing platforms can often add or update decoding and optimisation features through software rather than dedicated fixed-function DSP alone.
HDMI as a replaceable subsystem
Video standards evolve faster than audio quality. A replaceable or upgradeable HDMI subsystem can materially extend useful product life.
Channel licensing and expansion
Some platforms allow output count to grow as the room expands. Others require purchasing the full channel capacity upfront.
Modular I/O
Replaceable analog, digital or AoIP cards can allow a processor to adapt when amplification architecture changes.
Remote service and updates
Long-term support also includes firmware cadence, remote diagnostics and the ability for an integrator to service the system without travelling to site.
What to prioritise
Choose the architecture whose likely upgrade path matches the cinema. Buying unused capability “just in case” is not the same as buying a platform designed to evolve.
