Physical outputs vs independent processing
A duplicated output simply sends the same bass signal to more than one connector. An independently processed subwoofer channel can potentially have its own level, delay, polarity, EQ, crossover logic and optimisation data.
For a multi-sub cinema, that distinction directly affects how well the bass system can be aligned across multiple seats.
LFE routing is not the whole bass system
The .1 LFE channel is only one source of low-frequency energy. Bass-management also redirects low frequencies from speakers that are crossed over to the subwoofer system.
Good processor architecture must therefore handle both soundtrack LFE and redirected bass coherently.
Why four independent subs can be transformative
Four independently managed subwoofers can be placed and delayed to complement one another, smoothing spatial variation before equalisation. Modern correction systems can then optimise the combined result rather than fighting a single large peak at one seat.
This is one reason processors such as Anthem AVM 90, Trinnov platforms and some Dirac Bass Control implementations can separate themselves from simpler designs.
Subwoofer arrays are a different category
WaveForming and other array-based approaches treat bass as a spatial wave-control problem. The required outputs may be part of front and rear arrays rather than “Sub 1 / Sub 2” in the conventional sense.
Once the room moves into array territory, processor channel count, routing flexibility and physical speaker design have to be considered together.
