Where should digital audio become analog in a home cinema?

Modern reference cinemas can keep audio in the digital domain far beyond the processor. Dante, AES/EBU and proprietary digital links change cable topology, amplifier placement and where the DAC actually lives.

Traditional separates convert inside the processor

In a conventional XLR system, the processor performs the digital-to-analog conversion and sends line-level analog audio to each amplifier channel. This is simple, familiar and compatible with an enormous range of power amplifiers.

Digital-output processors move the conversion downstream

AES/EBU and Dante can carry many processed channels digitally to amplifiers or external converters. The DAC can therefore live at the amplifier stage rather than inside the AV processor.

This can reduce large analog looms, simplify high-channel-count racks and make channel expansion more software- or network-driven.

Some ecosystems go further

Steinway Lyngdorf uses proprietary digital links as part of a closed processor-amplifier-loudspeaker architecture. This can create exceptionally clean integration, but it intentionally trades open amplifier choice for end-to-end system control.

Network audio introduces IT responsibilities

AoIP systems need appropriate switch design, clocking, VLAN/QoS decisions and disciplined network commissioning. The cabling may become simpler while the infrastructure knowledge becomes more demanding.

Choose a digital architecture because it improves the system design, not because Ethernet appears more modern than XLR.
