Separating processing and amplification allows larger power supplies, more flexible amplifier choice, easier channel scaling and often cleaner rack/system design.
When a receiver is enough
For modest systems, a capable AVR can be an excellent solution and may reduce cost and complexity.
When a processor makes sense
Dedicated cinemas, high speaker counts, demanding loudspeakers and reference calibration workflows increasingly justify separate processing and amplification.
