XLR vs AES/EBU vs Dante/AES67 processor outputs

At reference level, choosing the processor also means choosing where digital-to-analog conversion happens and how dozens of channels travel through the rack.

Balanced XLR

Balanced analog remains the most universal connection between processor and power amplifier. It is easy to troubleshoot, compatible with almost every premium amplifier and does not depend on network configuration.

AES/EBU

AES3/AES-EBU keeps audio digital over point-to-point balanced connections. It can simplify long cable runs and feed compatible digital amplifiers or converters.

Dante and AES67

Audio over IP can transport dozens of channels over standard network infrastructure, creating far more routing flexibility and reducing large analog looms.

Where the DAC lives

With analog XLR outputs, D/A conversion occurs in the processor. With digital or AoIP outputs, the DAC may move into the amplifier or a downstream interface.

Rack implications

Digital architectures can change cable density, redundancy, amplifier location and service workflow. They also demand stronger networking knowledge.

How to choose

Use analog when universal compatibility and simplicity matter. Consider AES or AoIP when channel count, digital amplifiers, active speakers or rack scale make conventional analog wiring cumbersome.
